Acne

Acne in adolescents and adults can have debilitating effects on your self-esteem. Although this condition is common, severe acne can cause you to become withdrawn and depressed, avoid social contact and activities, and develop chronic appearance issues. Misinformation and conflicting advice on this condition can make acne even more frustrating and confusing. At Nivali, we approach acne with compassion and understanding to help you achieve incredible results now and into the future. At Nivali, we attack acne from all angles with the goal of achieving great results.

What Causes Acne

Acne is a skin condition caused by the inflammation of hair follicles. Inflammation occurs when these follicles become clogged by dead skin cells and oil, causing blackheads (open comedo), whiteheads/bumps (closed comedo), and pimples. More severe kinds of acne produce pustules, cysts, and nodules. The impulse to pick at pimples and pustules is strong, but it eventually leads to scarring. Acne scarring makes the skin look “pitted”, like the peel of an orange. Unless treated, these scars can remain over a lifetime.

Acne and self-esteem

Living with acne is one of the main causes of low self-esteem in adolescents and adults that suffer from it. Acne can cause people to become withdrawn and depressed, avoid social contact and activities, and develop chronic issues around their appearance. The condition can be very frustrating and confusing with all the conflicting advice. This is combined with a lack of understanding about what type skin and acne you have, and about your internal climate. Acne can be difficult to control without a proper skin assessment, analysis, and treatment plan, as everyone’s acne is very unique based on a wide range of factors. We are here to help!

At Nivali, we approach acne with kindness and understanding. If you are new to us and dealing with acne, booking an initial Acne & Acne Scarring Consultation is required before we can treat your skin. This allows us to provide the best treatment plan for you.

Acne management & treatment at Nivali

At Nivali, we approach acne from several angles at once to achieve effective results. There is no quick-and-easy fix, but you will work closely with Charmaine and her team to prepare a treatment plan that works for you and your lifestyle.

Step 1: Book an Acne & Acne Scarring Consultation to determine the type and severity of your acne. We can discuss lifestyle and environmental triggers, previous treatment methods, and your expectations.

Step 2: Build a treatment plan that’s personalized to your needs and condition. Every person is different, and so are the methods of acne treatment. Your treatment plan may include, a combination approach of medicated home-care and an appropriate in-clinic treatment. Clinical therapy can include Hydrafacials, Laser for Acne, Clinical Peels, or one of our Acne Facials with Blue Light Therapy . This acne management approach is ideal for those who won’t or can't take antibiotics, birth control pills or harsh oral Vitamin A drugs. Lifestyle and environmental changes will also be discussed and treatment may include a referral to a naturopathic doctor.

Step 3: Implement your complete treatment plan. There is no cure for acne, or a silver bullet that is without risks to your health. Managing acne is about a carefully maintained lifestyle and following a well-thought-out, expertly guided skin care regimen and treatment plan.
