Holiday Skincare - Travel Tips & More
/KEEP YOUR SKIN FLAWLESS OVER THE HOLIDAYS
It’s that time of year again! Busy airports, jammed highways, and everyone excited about getting home to spend the holiday season with loved ones.
Exciting as it is, it also adds a level of stress - did you remember all the gifts? Who’s bringing dinner? Do we have all the kids? You know - the one million things you’re supposed to have remembered to make sure the whole holiday goes smoothly.
And as small as it sounds compared to the big stuff we’re always faced with during the holiday season, having to leave your everyday routine can really mess with your usual skincare regimen. For those with lucky enough to have naturally incredible skin, that might not mean very much - your skin might be able to handle the changing environments, eating extra sugary holiday treats, or the one day you completely forgot to moisturize.
For those who struggle with more challenging skin conditions, holiday travel and chaos brings a host of variables that make it increasingly difficult to maintain your routine and keep up your hard-fought skincare progress. All those things you’ve been diligent about - applying your products correctly and consistently, drinking lots of water, watching your food sensitivities, getting your monthly facials… it’s so easy to accidentally fall out of line when the holidays demand so much attention!
We’re here to gently remind you that your skin needs you, too! It’s a way you can bring a piece of your routine with you - a little bit of calm in the midst of chaos - and make sure you’re giving yourself the attention you deserve through a season that’s all about giving to others.
Here are 5 ways to keep your skin healthy (no matter what your holiday looks like):
Invest in travel-sized products wherever you can
Have a solid routine that you know you’ll re-purchase? Grab those travel sizes - you know you won’t waste the contents, and you’ll be sure to have the right components to keep your skin healthy and taken-care of during your travels.
Hot tip: most of our kits have several travel-friendly products inside! These are a great way to get built-in value for your purchase but also give you options for air travel.
Don’t see the travel size you need online? We may be able to order it for you! Ask us about travel sizes for your whole routine - we’ll get you set up.
Can’t bring everything? Cut your routine down to the essentials.
Another great tip - if you can’t bring all 12 steps (high-maintenance who?), make sure you have the absolute essentials! Bring a cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF. Even if your skin isn’t used to this stripped-down routine, you’ll still be providing your face & neck with the steps to ensure cleanliness and protection from the environment.
Flying? Bring these to avoid dryness:
Sheet masks are your new best friend! Yeah sure, you’re taking your normally private self-care ritual public - but you’ll look fabulous and it’s a convenient way to combat the changing air pressure of being on a flight.
Heavy moisturizer! Not a sheet-mask-in-public person? No problem - head to the airport with clean skin. Bring your travel-sized moisturizer and SPF with you. Once you’re at elevation, head on over to the tiny bathroom and apply your heavier moisturizer and SPF overtop. This will help lock in moisture and provide a little boost to combat that super-drying cabin air.
Cleansing cloths. Adverse reactions to air travel, depending on your skin type, might not be just dryness. Acne-prone skin can face challenges here as well with oil production. A product like the Colorescience Hydrating Cleansing Cloths will provide a quick refresh, helping to whisk away any extra oil your skin might be producing. These are a hydrating formula though, so you won’t be dried-out and you’ll still get that essential moisture your skin needs to stay healthy.
Prep for the climate you’re headed to
Are you from the west coast, but you’re headed east to see family? You’ll face drier air! Your skin is used to the humidity of the west coast, so this is a good time to think about swapping your usual moisturizer for something a little richer.
Going east to west? You’ll face an increase in humidity - look for a lighter moisturizer or a multi-purpose serum that can double as a light moisturizer (we recommend Daily Power Defense for this!). We also recommend cleansing cloths for a quick refresh - cut down on potentially oilier skin this way.
Water, water, and more water!
Indulging in a little more alcohol over the holidays? Enjoy - but pair that rum & eggnog with an extra glass of water! Enjoying your favourite holiday drink is totally fine - however, alcohol is dehydrating, and your skin will respond to an increase in alcohol consumption. So top up those drinks, but try to have those few extra glasses of water to keep dehydration at bay. This helps the skin stay hydrated and will allow you to enjoy a tasty holiday nightcap with family and friends, but without the day-after dry skin consequences!
