Reef-safe sunscreens: what are they, what does the term truly mean, and what do we know about all of it?
“Reef-safe sunscreen'“ is a term loosely used to describe sunscreens that are formulated with ingredients that are gentle on coral reefs and other marine ecosystems - in other words, mineral sunscreen! Traditional sunscreens (think drugstore brands) often contain chemical compounds, such as oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been shown to be harmful to coral reefs and marine life. When these chemicals enter the water through swimmers, they can accumulate in coral tissues. Over time, and with enough of these chemicals, this causes bleaching, DNA damage, and disrupts the delicate balance of the reef ecosystem. This damage can also extend to impact fish, sea turtles, and other marine life.
Each year, an estimated 14,000 tons of sunscreen enter coral reefs worldwide. This influx of chemicals contributes to coral bleaching, a phenomenon where corals lose their vibrant colors and become more susceptible to disease and death. Coral reefs are not only incredibly beautiful but also vital ecosystems that support a diverse array of marine species. We’ve always been committed to products that not only work for our clients, but that are kind to the planet.
Fortunately, clients can play an active role in protecting coral reefs by making a simple, yet significant, switch to reef-safe sunscreens. These sunscreens use mineral filters, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which act as physical barriers, reflecting and scattering harmful UV rays away from the skin. These mineral-based sunscreens are considered safe for coral reefs and have been shown to have minimal impact on marine ecosystems. You’ll notice that most of the sunscreens we carry at Nivali are mineral - this is intentional! Being reef-safe and avoiding extra damage to our oceans is just one of the wide array of benefits that mineral sunscreens have.
